Was air play sufficient for the price?

I spent quite a few years as a national radio plugger back in the 90’s and I would issue a very strong warning to anyone planning to use a ‘plugger’.

The top successful pluggers have always tended to prioritise their main (usually big name) clients and labels, and anything else they take on, is often just delievered into the producer’s inbox, but not really plugged. Obviously there are good/honest pluggers and ‘others’, so the keyword here is RESEARCH.

Find out what airplay your chosen plugger has achieved recently (past successes don’t count for a lot if they are not getting airplay currently). See if they have successfully gained airplay for indie artists not on a major label, on national and larger local radio and TV. If you can find a contact, check with the artist/label themselves that the plugger claiming to be responsible for their airplay, actually was!

Where possible, try to get a deal that offers a little less up-front payment with bonuses for success such as a small (say 1%) cut on rights or similar.

Hope this helps a bit.
